Company History
Community Regional Medical Center began in 1897 with Celia Burnett who was a proprietor of a successful boarding house at the southeast corner of Fulton and Calaveras streets. Burnett joined forces with Fresno physicians to form a private hospital known as the Burnett Sanitarium. Today, Community Regional is the flagship of Community Medical Centers’ three acute-care facilities, with 626 licensed beds and an average of 554 inpatients a day. This academic-affiliated medical center is located on a 58-acre campus in downtown Fresno and has a fullservice, 56,000-square-foot emergency department – one of the largest in California – and is home to the region’s only comprehensive burn and Level I trauma centers. Specialty units include neuroscience, cardiovascular, orthopedic and women and children’s services. Community Regional is home to the area’s first certified Primary Stroke Center and comprehensive neuroscience program. It also was the first Valley hospital to offer a revolutionary, minimally invasive heart surgery, as well as “Generation 4” CyberKnife – a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of both cancerous and noncancerous tumors.
Leading the charge with the latest technology and facilities, Community Regional continues its commitment to meeting the Valley’s health care needs. Hospital additions include a 52-bed Central California Neuroscience Institute, more than 100 beds dedicated to cardiovascular care, including a 50-bed unit with leading edge monitoring equipment and private rooms, and an 85-bed Level III neonatal intensive care unit for the most fragile newborns. On the Community Regional campus, recent additions include a new six-story parking structure with more than 1,500 stalls, a four-story medical office building on the east side of campus, while the north end features the nearly 80,000 square-foot Deran Koligian Ambulatory Care Center. Terry’s House, a hospitality home for families of patients receiving critical care at Community Regional was completed in January 2011.
